The song was commissioned by the Texas Choral Directors Association for its 20th anniversary. Joseph M. Martin says that he conceived The Awakening as a tribute to Doris Clark, his high school music teacher. He grew up in a city where violence was a daily occurrence. His only solace was music and the lessons of this teacher who was sadly murdered in the choir practice room of the college.
