Opus IV of the four-part chorus cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wandering Fellow). The other three opuses are Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht, Ging heut' morgen über's Feld and Ich hab' ein glühend Messer. Gustav Mahler wrote the lyrics based on a collection of German folk songs entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn.
