Opus II of the four-part chorus cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a wandering companion). The other three opuses are Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht, Ich hab' ein glühend Messer and Die zwei blauen Augen von meinem Schatz. Gustav Mahler wrote the lyrics based on a collection of German folk songs entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn.
