Opus I of the four-part chorus cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a wandering companion). The other three opuses are Ging heut' morgen über's Feld, Ich hab' ein glühend Messer and Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht. Gustav Mahler wrote the lyrics based on a collection of German folk songs entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn.
