From a ballad probably originating in Northern England. The song describes an adulterous tryst between a young man (Little Musgrave) and a noblewoman (Lady Barnard) that is ended when the woman's husband discovers and kills them. This song exists in many textual variants and has several variant names, like Matty Groves. The song dates to at least 1611 or 1613. The work is dedicated to Richard Wood and the musicians of Oflag VII-B, Germany .
